A magical winter lights trail is coming to London's South Bank this week
"Speaking of that river-lights combo, this week the Southbank Centre's Winter Light trail has returned for the 2025 festive season, What's more (and as always), it's free to visit and there's no need to book. This year's Winter Light festival has transformed the area into a glittering wonderland of lights and art installations, such as a neon display commemorating fashion ads from the 90s by France-Lise McGurn."
"When your fingers start to freeze, there's plenty to warm you up at the outdoor Christmas market: steaming cups of glühwein, sizzling bratwursts, and artisan treats. Or you could catch a show - the play at the Southbank Centre is a tapdancing extravaganza - or see an exhibition at the Haywood Gallery. Discover more waterside festive things to do at the South Bank this year here."
The Southbank Centre's Winter Light trail returns to the Thames from November 12 until January 18, 2026. The free, no-booking event features illuminated art installations, including a neon display commemorating 1990s fashion ads by France-Lise McGurn and a chandelier-like sculpture by Lee Broom outside the Royal Festival Hall that performs hourly with Big Ben's chimes. Visitors can enjoy an outdoor Christmas market serving glühwein, bratwursts, and artisan treats, plus performances such as a tap-dancing show and exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery. The trail caters to date nights, family outings, and general festive atmosphere along the South Bank.
