"I LIVE IN MINNEAPOLIS, in the Powderhorn neighborhood. There's incredible diversity in Powderhorn, a rich history of art and activism, and it's a welcoming place to call home. Both my girls have grown up walking to school. I live three blocks from George Floyd Square and blocks from where ICE agents killed Renee Good. Every day, they drive past my house and then the neighbors follow, legally observing, honking horns, and blowing whistles. It's uplifting to hear my neighbors outside."
"What I learned in 2020 is when a helicopter is overhead, a march is happening, or something like it nearby, and so when I heard the helicopters circling above my house that Saturday morning, the day they killed Renee Good, I thought, "Oh, no" and knew I would follow the sound. It wasn't far to walk, and I didn't stay long. But I took pictures on my phone and later, at home, I zoomed in and saw the bullet hole through her car's glass."
"Years ago, in 2013, I started the project Ficciones Typografika, where I'd hang posters on a marquee on the side of my garage. By the time I retired the installation in 2018 I'd hung over sixteen hundred posters from around the world. This was for my neighbors, to give them a window onto a larger world of art and typography. I also showed my own design work; the work I contributed personally would often be political in nature."
Powderhorn in Minneapolis combines diversity, art history, and activism and serves as a close-knit neighborhood where children walk to school. The neighborhood sits three blocks from George Floyd Square and near the location where ICE agents killed Renee Good, prompting daily car processions, legal observers, honking, and whistles. Helicopters circling often signal nearby marches and can lead residents to follow sounds to scenes. One resident photographed a bullet hole in Good's car after zooming in on phone images. The Ficciones Typografika project displayed over sixteen hundred international posters from 2013 to 2018, offering neighbors access to art and politically oriented design work.
