Waterloo-Clapham Junction trains return after 11-day Christmas engineering blockade
"Train services on South Western Railway ( SWR) returned this morning between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction after an 11-day blockade to upgrade one of the country's busiest railway corridors. More than 350 engineers have been on site since Christmas Day, carrying out a package of works around Queenstown Road, renewing around a kilometre of track and the electrified third rail, replacing switches and crossings, and upgrading signalling and power systems."
"Speaking on behalf of South Western Railway and Network Rail Wessex, George Murrell, Route Renewals Director, said: "I'd like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding while we carried out these essential upgrades at London Waterloo. The improvements will make one of the busiest stretches of railway in the country more resilient and customers can expect fewer faults and delays, together with smoother and more reliable journeys.""
Train services between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction resumed after an 11-day blockade that upgraded a heavily used corridor. More than 350 engineers worked since Christmas Day renewing about a kilometre of track and the electrified third rail, replacing switches and crossings, and upgrading signalling and power systems. The project also laid new ballast and sleepers to strengthen the track bed and altered platforms at Queenstown Road to fit the revised layout. Concentrating the work over the Christmas period avoided up to eight separate weekend closures and reduced longer-term disruption. Two further partial closures are scheduled on 10/11 January and 31 January/1 February.
