However, they're really popular, so I highly recommend you plan to arrive at dawn. It will be cooler and the crowds will still be waking up. When the park starts getting crowded, you can take a break and eat your picnic you've brought, or head on out."
"Don't forget to bring plenty of water! Note that the freebies don't include camping or special tours. All national parks will offer free admission on Saturday, Sept. 27 for National Public Lands Day, saving visitors up to about $50 at many parks. Parks are expected to be very popular, so plan to arrive at dawn when temperatures are cooler and crowds are just starting to form. Bring plenty of water and a picnic to use as a break when parks become crowded. Free admission does not cover camping reservations or special tours. Joshua Tree is a recommended sunrise destination, but expect higher crowds on these free-admission days. The next national park fee-free day is Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
