Tickets Alert: A glowing steam train returns for winter
"A steam train covered in lights will return to the Epping Ongar railway this winter, creating a magical ride through the countryside. This is Lights Express - a chance to ride behind a steam train that is not just decorated inside and out for the festive season but lights up the countryside as it passes through the woods and fields."
"A trip inside a steam train is always a delight, but there's something magical about arriving as the crowd waits at Ongar station. A toot in the distance and the familiar chug chug sound of a steam engine in the distance as the glowing leviathan approaches. The carriages are covered in lights, and even the locomotive is a Tron-esque futuristic light show as it glides past."
"The real show is to come, for the railway runs through woods, and what better than to have coloured lights on the outside of the train lighting up all the winter trees as the train chugs past. After a fortunately shortlived experiement of only selling tickets in pairs last year, this year they are returning to allowing single folk (and odd number families) to attend."
The Lights Express is an illuminated steam train experience on the Epping Ongar Railway, offering festively decorated carriages and a light-covered locomotive. Trains run through woods and fields, with coloured exterior lights illuminating winter trees as the train passes. Passengers hear the approach of a steam engine at Ongar station and see a Tron-esque locomotive and lit carriages. Single tickets and odd-number family bookings are allowed after last year's pair-only experiment. Tickets cost £25 for adults and £20 for children. Services operate Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 15th November 2025 to 4th January 2026. Trains depart Ongar; travel via the Central line to Epping then the 20 bus or local car parks.
