""Unless you're leaving first thing in the morning, that drive can be brutal with traffic,""
""In a region where we're so used to driving everywhere, the Amtrak can feel like a small reset. If you have the time, it's a really refreshing alternative.""
""Taking the Amtrak gave me space to slow down, be present, while taking in parts of SoCal you'd normally miss from driving on the freeway,""
Car culture remains a cornerstone of Southern California, yet many young adults increasingly choose the Pacific Surfliner between Los Angeles and San Diego as an alternative to driving. The route spans 351 miles from San Luis Obispo to San Diego Counties and often faces track closures from landslides. Pre-pandemic ridership exceeded 2.5 million annually; the route welcomed over 2 million riders last year, gaining more than 60,000. The Pacific Surfliner added a 13th daily round trip to meet demand. Trips take about 3 to 3.5 hours and typically cost $30 to $50. Riders value scenic coastal and inland views and the chance to slow down and observe parts of Southern California missed from freeways.
