The Gross Reason You Shouldn't Wash Your Hands in Airplane Bathrooms
Briefly

Flying can be a wonderful experience, but concerns about cleanliness onboard aircraft, especially in the bathrooms, are serious. Experts note that while toilets may be regularly cleaned, common touch points like door handles are often not sanitized. A study discovered dangerous bacteria in ice cubes served on planes, prompting recommendations to avoid consuming beverages like tea and coffee. Instead, personal wipes are suggested for hygiene, indicating a significant shift in thinking about onboard cleanliness and safety.
"The toilets are regularly cleaned, but the locks and door handles are not," Josephine Remo, a flight attendant and travel blogger, shared.
A consistent percentage of the microorganisms identified from ice are known agents of human infections, and their presence indicates an environmental contamination.
"My takeaway from doing the research was to not drink the coffee and the tea. At all," Charles Platkin, the author of the study and the executive director of the Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center, previously told T+L.
"I don't wash my hands either. I have wipes that I use."
