Step into history one last time: Bexley station's underpass shuts for good on Saturday
"If you've ever wanted to use the subway underneath Bexley station, you have until Friday evening, as it will close permanently on Saturday. The station recently gained a new footbridge and lifts to connect between platforms, but has also kept the subway open as an alternative. However, Network Rail recently found significant structural defects in the underpass and has now decided that it's better to close the subway and fill it in rather than attempt to repair it."
"We're really sorry for the inconvenience caused by closing the subway. Our engineers carefully considered whether it could be repaired. Unfortunately, because the structure also supports the busy railway line above - with both passenger and heavy freight trains passing through - the work would have been highly complex, disruptive, and extremely costly. Closing the subway is the safest and most practical step we can take for our customers."
The subway underneath Bexley station will close permanently; customers have until Friday evening to use it, though the train operator states the subway will remain safe to use in the meantime and will stay open into early September. Network Rail found significant structural defects in the underpass and concluded that filling it in is preferable to complex, disruptive, and costly repairs because the structure supports the busy railway above, including passenger and heavy freight trains. A new footbridge and lifts opened in 2024 as part of a £6m Access for All investment, providing full step-free access and alternative platform crossing. Southeastern adjusted stopping positions to align with the new footbridge, and removing subway entrances will free platform space.
