Some ferries canceled thanks to Erin's rough surf
Briefly

The MBTA canceled all Lynn, Quincy, and Winthrop ferry trips on August 22 because of severe offshore weather related to Hurricane Erin. Minor delays were expected on Charlestown, East Boston, and Hingham/Hull ferries between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the USS Constitution escort through Boston Harbor. The Steamship Authority issued travel advisories, diverted several Oak Bluffs trips to Vineyard Haven, and reported cancellations on the Hyannis–Nantucket route while waiving change and cancellation fees for affected travel. The National Weather Service warned of strong winds, large breaking waves, dangerous rip currents, and localized beach erosion around the Cape and Islands.
The Steamship Authority also issued a travel advisory for its services, saying that it is closely monitoring water conditions. Several trips initially set to go to Oak Bluffs were diverted to Vineyard Haven on the Martha's Vineyard-Woods Hole route, according to the ferry operator. Service cancellations also affected the Hyannis-Nantucket route. "Due to the forecast, we are waiving change and cancellation fees for all travel scheduled for today," the advisory noted.
The National Weather Service warned that strong winds will continue through the afternoon, affecting waters around the Cape and Islands especially. "Large breaking waves continue to be a threat today through Saturday evening. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions expected along with localized beach erosion," the agency noted. Winds remain strong over the Cape, Islands, and surrounding waters through this afternoon. Coastal flooding, beach erosion, & dangerous rip currents with high surf will also continue to be a concern through today into tomorrow. #MAwx #RIwx #CTwx pic.twitter.com/33XPmew8dn- NWS Boston (@NWSBoston) August 22, 2025
