"The Roman-Byzantine style Basilica is relatively new - the first stone was laid in 1875, and the Basilica was consecrated in 1918. It was conceived as a symbol of penitence, trust, hope and faith after the Prussian Army defeated the French army in 1870, and designed by architect Paul Abadie. The beautiful white stone used in the construction came from the Souppes-sur-Loing quarry in Seine et Marne."
"But just a handful are aware of the hôtellerie (formerly the Maison Éphrem), a guesthouse run by Benedictine Sisters, whose community is close by. The Basilica is a "Sanctuary of Eucharistic Adoration and Divine Mercy" where an unbroken chain of prayer takes place, an idea proposed by Mother Marie de Saint Pierre, foundress of the Benedictine Sister's Montmartre community. The first sisters participated in the prayer of adoration on 1 August, 1885."
Montmartre has served as a site of worship since ancient times, with Gallic druids and later Roman temples dedicated to Mercury and Mars occupying the hilltop. The Sacré-Coeur Basilica, built in Roman-Byzantine style, saw its first stone laid in 1875 and was consecrated in 1918 as a symbol of penitence, trust, hope and faith after the 1870 French defeat. The structure uses a self-cleaning white stone from Souppes-sur-Loing; a 19-ton bell funded by Savoie was hauled up the hill in 1895. Around 11 million visitors come annually. A Benedictine-run hôtellerie (formerly Maison Éphrem) and a nearby sister community maintain an unbroken practice of Eucharistic Adoration begun on 1 August 1885.
