Popular Mexico destination doubles down on tourism fee
"The government of Baja California Sur, home to popular tourism spots like Los Cabos, announced the Embrace It fee - a mandatory tax for visitors over 12 who stay in the country for more than 24 hours - in June. And now, as of January, the price has increased from 470 Mexican pesos (about $25) to 488 pesos (about $28)."
"The fee is meant to "generate funds to strengthen natural environmental conservation, community development, and local tourism infrastructure," the Baja California Sur state government said when it launched the fee."
"In the first six months of collecting the fee, Baja California Sur collected only 256 million pesos from 544,680 tourists, according to Travel and Tour World - a far cry from the over 4 million tourists who visited Los Cabos alone in that timeframe."
Baja California Sur implemented the mandatory 'Embrace It' fee for visitors over 12 staying longer than 24 hours, starting at 470 Mexican pesos (approximately $25) in June. The fee increased to 488 pesos (approximately $28) as of January and will remain in effect through the end of the year. Visitors must pay online to receive a QR code for presentation upon arrival. The fee funds environmental conservation, community development, and tourism infrastructure. However, enforcement has been inconsistent, with only 256 million pesos collected from 544,680 tourists in the first six months, despite over 4 million visitors to Los Cabos alone during that period. Cruise passengers face separate fees, with Mexico's cruise tax increasing to $10 for 2026.
