Island community grieves for teacher who fell to death on Calif. solo trek
Briefly

Harris Levinson, a 61-year-old former high school teacher, died one day into a solo backpacking trip on the John Muir Trail. He was found near Whitney Portal after failing to respond to loved ones. Levinson's body was located at 9,400 feet in Lone Pine Creek, suggesting he died after falling about 100 feet into a gully. His hike began on June 23, and a friend uncovered his missing status on July 8 when they discovered untouched food at Onion Valley. Levinson was known for his teaching and mentoring in Vashon.
"For reasons we don't fully understand, he was hiking the climber's route up Mt. Whitney. Unlike the main John Muir Trail, this path is treacherous and difficult, and not very well traveled."
"Harris Levinson, 61, died near Whitney Portal, Inyo County Search and Rescue confirmed Saturday."
