Airport security bins are highly contaminated due to the diverse items passengers place in them. Trays may become dirty quickly with food containers, dirty shoes, and spilled liquids. A former Transportation Security Officer advises against placing cell phones in these bins. Frequent contact with a phone makes it susceptible to germ transfer to the face and hands. To reduce exposure, it is recommended to keep the phone in a bag during screening, as cell phones can remain inside bags through the security process.
"The security bins are disgusting. I've seen people place containers of food in them, dirty shoes with rainwater on them, spilled soda, baby food - you name it, I've seen it."
"I touch my phone often and hold it up to my face to talk, so I don't want to transfer unknown germs to my face or hands."
"Cell phones are one of the approved electronics that can remain in your bag during screening."
