How We Spent Our Family Vacation: A Kid-Friendly Ski Trip in the French Alps
"We're die hard skiers and plan most of our trips around outdoor activities and taking advantage of nature and adventure," Erin says. "But kids ski lessons in the US alone are averaging four hundred dollars a day. In Europe that covers an entire week of kids lessons. We were able to do this trip for less than we would normally spend going to Utah or Wyoming to ski."
"That dream had grown steadily over the years as the girls became stronger skiers and the family spent countless winter weekends on East Coast hills and annual trips out West. But something else grew at the same time: the cost. Lessons, lift tickets, lunches, lodging. Everything in the US kept creeping upward until even their most beloved ski trips felt financially exhausting."
Erin and Jeremy Freedman started their daughters on skis at age three and aimed to ski mountains together as a family. The daughters, now 7 and 10, can haul gear and ski full days. U.S. costs for lessons, lift tickets, meals, and lodging rose until trips felt financially exhausting. Kids' lessons in the U.S. average $400 a day, while comparable instruction in Europe can cover an entire week. The family canceled a previous Alps plan because of low January snowfall and replanned carefully. Choosing the Alps delivered larger mountains, lower overall cost, and a week of serious ski school for the children.
