Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first Vande Bharat sleeper train on 17 January 2026 at Malda Town, West Bengal. The train connects Howrah Junction (West Bengal) with Kamakhya Junction (Guwahati), covering about 1,000 kilometres and stopping at key stations including Bandel, Malda Town, New Jalpaiguiri, Katwa, New Coochbehar and New Bongaigaon. The service operates at semi-high speed up to 180 kmph and is expected to be roughly three hours faster than existing trains, though exact timings remain unconfirmed. Coach composition includes eleven 3-tier AC coaches, four 2-tier AC coaches and one AC First coach. Each coach features cushioned sleeping berths and multiple safety and advanced technology amenities.
