"Since last fall, the European Union has been gradually phasing in the new European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS, which requires foreign travelers who don't need visas (including those from the U.S.) to apply online for electronic travel authorization before they leave home. It will replace passport stamps with biometric identity checks at the point of entry for travelers flying into the 29 countries in the Schengen Area."
"In a letter to EU officials, a group comprising the International Air Transport Association, Airlines for Europe and Airports Council International said that the new system is already causing significant delays for passengers. According to the group, a mandatory full implementation of the system this spring could mean massive backups for arriving travelers during this summer's seasonal travel crunch."
European airline groups are urging the European Commission to delay full implementation of the ETIAS electronic travel authorization system, warning of severe summer travel delays for U.S. and foreign visitors. The system replaces passport stamps with biometric checks for entry into 29 Schengen Area countries. Meanwhile, U.S. aviation faces mixed developments: the Department of Homeland Security reversed its TSA PreCheck suspension but maintains Global Entry restrictions for returning travelers. Spirit Airlines negotiates bankruptcy emergence, Southwest adjusts California routes, American Airlines improves baggage services, and four major U.S. airports enhance premium lounges.
