Colorado's Only Ski Train Is Back-and It Takes You to the Slopes for Just $9
"But one Colorado ski area flips that narrative entirely: Winter Park Resort. The ski area, which is Colorado's longest continually operating ski resort, has been a beloved mountain escape for Denverites for decades so much so that when its lifts started turning in 1940, a dedicated ski train started running from downtown Denver. Today, that tradition lives on with the Winter Park Express, a ski train that operates in partnership with Amtrak."
"With adult fares starting at just $9 ($4.50 for kids), riders can skip the rental-car counter, avoid I-70 traffic, and forget about parking altogether. This year, the Winter Park Express starts running on Dec. 19, with service every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through Jan. 4, 2026. After the New Year, the schedule expands to Thursday through Sunday service from Jan. 8 to March 29."
Winter Park Resort operates a dedicated ski train, the Winter Park Express, in partnership with Amtrak that connects downtown Denver directly to the resort base. Adult fares start at $9 and kids fares at $4.50, with ski and snowboard storage included at no extra charge. Service begins Dec. 19 with weekend runs through Jan. 4, 2026, then expands to Thursday through Sunday from Jan. 8 to March 29. The one-way journey takes about three hours, with a 7 a.m. departure from Denver and a 4:33 p.m. return from Winter Park, and a bi-level Sightseer Lounge offers scenic views.
