"Does buying of a souvenir plot of land actually grant you ownership of that land? No, but it's a fun gag gift all the same. (And it's definitely been amusing to call my dog "Lord Spaghetti" because of it.) But that idea of "visiting our land" never really left our minds. My sister and I have always been close, but we hadn't traveled together since a family wedding brought us to Italy and Greece the summer of 2003."
"Noble titles aside, Scotland was a perfect destination for our sibling trip. We both love whisky. Scotland is an English-speaking country and not a super long flight from the East Coast, making it an easier lift for two people traveling internationally together. Scotland is full of really old, really beautiful architecture, and Vanessa works in historical preservation. Wins all around."
Amanda spent Christmas 2020 in Brooklyn with her husband and new puppy because COVID made travel unsafe. Her sister Vanessa gifted a framed certificate purporting to make Amanda a "lady" by virtue of Scottish land ownership. The certificate was a souvenir and did not confer legal ownership, but it inspired talk of visiting Scotland. The sisters, who had not traveled together since 2003, planned a sibling trip because they both love whisky, prefer an English-speaking destination within a manageable flight from the U.S. East Coast, and admire Scotland's historic architecture. Amanda researched bars and restaurants while Vanessa mapped sights in Edinburgh and Inverness.
