The aircraft never climbed above 9,500 feet and spent under an hour airborne before landing back at about 11:47 a.m. The flight, carrying 177 passengers, returned because of an indication of a mechanical issue related to the flaps. The crew declared an emergency due to excessive fuel weight for the transatlantic trip; passengers were rebooked and the aircraft is undergoing evaluation and maintenance in Paris.
