"Every time we add a new Masai giraffe to the population, it's a big, big deal. We're just so excited to have this little girl here and healthy it appears, and on the right track."
"We've actually seen those moments where she has zoomies. Where she's kind of bouncing around. Mstari is a phenomenal single mom. And this little kid isn't exactly missing dad being around because he wouldn't have been a part of the story."
"The Kenyan Honorary Consulate in Toronto chose five possible Swahili names for the calf: Binti, meaning daughter. Imara, meaning strong, resilient. Nyota, meaning star. Neema, meaning grace. Sanaa, meaning beauty or art."
The Toronto Zoo welcomes a healthy female giraffe calf born on February 2, more than a month after her father Kiko died in a habitat door accident. The zoo is inviting the public to name the baby through a voting process running until March 23. The Kenyan Honorary Consulate in Toronto provided five Swahili name options: Binti (daughter), Imara (strong/resilient), Nyota (star), Neema (grace), and Sanaa (beauty/art). The calf will be publicly viewable starting March 13. Zoo CEO Dolf DeJong expressed excitement about adding a Masai giraffe to the population, noting the young giraffe is healthy and playful. The mother, Mstari, is providing excellent single parenting, as male giraffes do not participate in offspring care.
