Sentencing arguments underway for girl who pleaded guilty to assault in fatal swarming | CBC News
Briefly

In a Toronto court, sentencing submissions are underway for a teen girl who pleaded guilty to assault in the fatal swarming of 59-year-old Kenneth Lee. Originally charged with manslaughter, she opted for a lesser charge. The Crown is advocating for 50 days of community supervision alongside a year of probation, while the defense seeks a reprimand or an absolute discharge. Lee was attacked by a group in December 2022; the girl filmed part of the assault. Seven other girls involved have also pleaded guilty to lesser offenses, with one awaiting trial.
The girl was present for about two-thirds of the attack, witnessed others hitting Lee, threw a small object at him and filmed his bloodied face.
The Crown seeks a sentence of 50 days community supervision, contrasted by a defense arguing for a reprimand or absolute discharge of the teen.
