Scarborough urban farm expanding to help more people grow their own food | CBC News
Briefly

The Malvern Family Resource Centre in Toronto's Scarborough is expanding its urban farm by nearly half a hectare to combat food insecurity. This expansion, supported by the local government, will boost the farm size and allow more residents to grow food. Currently, the farm fosters 17 farmers and has a waitlist of 15 people seeking to join. This initiative not only aims to increase local food production but also enhances community engagement and wellbeing among farmers who contribute to local food banks.
"We are playing a vital role in addressing food insecurity throughout Scarborough," said Claire Perttula, urban agriculture and food program manager for the Malvern Family Resource Centre.
"Expanding the farm will allow us to increase that impact, creating more farming businesses and growing more food locally."
"But there's a real like sense of joy that the farmers have from being out here working in this space, contributing to food security in their community."
"With this expansion, we'll be able to get a lot of those community members who are currently on the waitlist into the farm to grow their own food."
