"With the cost of groceries what it is, that means parents saving hundreds of dollars. The program will provide 115,000 children across every CampTO location with a healthy mid-morning meal, expanding from last year's pilot that provided morning snacks for up to 56,000 children at 89 designated locations in response to increased food insecurity faced by children who attend summer camps."
"Before this change only three in 10 registrants were from the local area. The early sign-up program let families who lived near six specific recreation centres register for in-demand programs one week earlier than everyone else, addressing the advantage wealthier individuals had when signing up for camps because of their access to better, faster technology. A year later, the amount of local registrants has more than doubled."
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow announced the expansion of two CampTO programs designed to address food insecurity and inequitable access to summer camps. The nutrition program, piloted last year at 89 locations serving 56,000 children with morning snacks, now expands to all CampTO locations providing mid-morning meals to 115,000 children, helping parents save hundreds of dollars amid rising grocery costs. A second program, which allowed families near six recreation centres early sign-up access to in-demand programs, successfully doubled local registrants by addressing the technology advantage previously held by wealthier families. These expansions aim to ensure all Toronto children have access to affordable, nutritious meals and equitable camp registration opportunities.
