Book brigade': US town forms human chain to move 9,100 books one-by-one
Briefly

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, approximately 300 residents of Chelsea, Michigan, came together to form a human chain, moving 9,100 books from Serendipity Books' previous location to its new storefront. The event, taking just under two hours, illustrated not only a practical solution to moving logistics but also an opportunity for residents to connect over their shared love of reading. Owner Michelle Tuplin emphasized the excitement and support she received since announcing the relocation, demonstrating the town's tightly-knit relationships and its long-standing tradition of neighborly assistance. The new location aims to open within two weeks.
The book brigade of about 300 people stood in two lines running along a sidewalk in downtown Chelsea, passing each title from Serendipity Books' former location directly to the correct shelves in the new building.
As people passed the books along, they said 'I have not read this' and 'that's a good one'. This involvement made the moving process not just practical, but meaningful.
Tuplin noted, 'Momentum had been building since I announced the move in January. So many people wanted to help.' This enthusiasm showcased community spirit.
Kaci Friss emphasized the tight-knit nature of Chelsea, stating, 'It's a small town and people just really look out for each other,' reflecting the collaborative effort behind the book move.
