
Amazon intends to continue developing Prime Air drone delivery with a goal of expanding to 500 million packages per year worldwide over the next decade. Prime Air operations and pilot tests are underway in eight U.S. cities, with additional cities planned soon, including Chicago’s south suburbs. Residents within an eight-mile radius of Amazon warehouses in Matteson and Markham are expected to be included in a trial, where participants can order small packages for drone delivery. The MK30 drones are FAA-approved, operate autonomously with onboard AI, carry up to a 5-pound payload, and can fly up to 400 feet above ground level at up to 73 mph using rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Risks include collisions, power loss, and potential drops that could generate significant force in dense neighborhoods.
