Ontario Premier Doug Ford's government is considering changes to new recycling rules that would weaken already planned measures. Producers argue that the rising costs of compliance are unsustainable, prompting calls for a re-evaluation of the current system. Environmental advocates worry that delays and cancellations of collection expansion will result in more waste landing in landfills or being incinerated. The Ontario government insists that the proposed adjustments aim to ensure the blue box system's sustainability while addressing job stability and increasing costs for producers, which have skyrocketed in recent years.
The government is now looking to delay some measures and outright cancel others, such as requirements to extend collection beyond the residential system.
We want to take what we've done and improve upon what already exists, but the costs were a big deal, and so we're proposing some measures that would bring about cost savings and transparency.
