A Conversation with Blake Murphy: His Career, Thoughts on the Draft, and Vladdy's Struggles
Briefly

Blake Murphy outlined his journey from aspiring junior hockey player to a prominent voice in sports media. His early interest in sports shifted to basketball following a wrestling injury in high school, while baseball developed through his grandfather. Murphy initially viewed sports media as a non-serious career until he wrote for fun and transitioned into journalism. He attended UBC's Journalism program briefly before entering the industry, where he embraced opportunities to write about multiple sports and refine his passion for dissecting statistics and strategies.
I grew up as a kid where hockey was my whole life. I thought at one point that I would get good enough to potentially play Junior B or something like that. It obviously didn't turn out.
I didn't really think it was like a serious career that you could do. I wrote a little bit for fun... had my own blog site, but I was headed to law school.
I wasn't even sure what kind of role I wanted in media at the time. I just knew I liked breaking things down and explaining stuff, whether it was stats, strategy, whatever.
That was cool 'cause it gave me license to just write for a year. I still did schoolwork and worked for the athletic department, but mostly I just wrote-hockey, basketball, baseball, even some UFC.
