John Chayka is expected to make major roster changes for the Toronto Maple Leafs this offseason. The front office is willing to discuss any player on the roster except Auston Matthews. The approach includes openness to hearing trade ideas for players who previously might not have been available. Morgan Rielly is a likely trade candidate despite a full no-movement clause, a long contract through 2030, and a $7.5 million AAV. William Nylander also has a no-movement clause, making a trade less likely, and a deal involving Nylander could affect Auston Matthews’ willingness to remain in Toronto.
"“One of the things I've been told by other teams with the Leafs, is that the message that's come out from their front office is that they're willing to discuss any players on their roster, except Auston Matthews,” stated Johnston."
"“They're open to hearing what you have to say on any player but Matthews. We've spent a lot of time talking about the Matthews' situation. I don't think there's anything new to update there. I find it kind of interesting, the word around the league is they're willing to listen on a lot of players, that in the past, they haven't been,” continued Johnston."
"“Keep in mind, guys like Morgan Rielly, William Nylander have no-movement clauses...John Chayka is considering basically anything outside of his captain.”"
"Rielly appears the most likely to be traded when it comes to the tenured core of the Maple Leafs. The mobile defenceman is signed through the 2030 season at $7.5 million AAV, and does own a full no-movement clause. With a young family in mind, it's going to be interesting to see if Chayka asks Rielly for a list of teams he'd approve a trade to heading into the NHL Draft next month in Buffalo."
