Members of the Weston Minor Hockey League are concerned about the future of their rink as it is being considered for redevelopment. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) plans to lease the Weston Lions Arena for its Launchpad program, which aims to promote youth sports and mentorship. While community members support the initiative, they express frustration over a lack of communication regarding the redevelopment plans and fear losing a beloved local ice rink. League president Lesley Bannard emphasizes the need for proper consultation and a chance to say goodbye to the rink.
We deserve to be consulted, and there was no community consultation whatsoever. The dream has always been for my kid to skate on this ice, and that might not happen—it's gut-wrenching.
Through my efforts, MLSE and the city will be moving forward with a leasing agreement for the arena. This is a monumental opportunity for our community.
