Ranking the Leafs' free agents Toronto can't afford to lose
Toronto Maple Leafs are preparing for NHL free agency ahead of the 2026-27 season after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. The team also has players entering free agency in July, and the focus is on whether any could return as valuable contributors. Travis Boyd returned on a one-year deal as depth and spent 2025-26 with the Toronto Marlies, producing 29 points in 34 games. Vinni Lettieri also played the full season with the Marlies, scoring 42 points in 55 games and contributing 13 points in 12 AHL playoff games. Both are viewed as potential depth options if they re-sign, with low to moderate likelihood of returning to Toronto.
"The Maple Leafs brought Travis Boyd back for a second go-around last offseason on a one-year deal to serve as valuable depth in their system. Boyd would end up spending the entire 2025-26 season with the Toronto Marlies though, accumulating 10 goals, 19 assists for 29 points in 34 games played. If Toronto has any interest at all to retain Boyd, he will remain as a depth piece with the Marlies going forward."
"Also signed during free agency in the past offseason as organizational depth, Vinni Lettieri also spend all of 2025-26 with the Marlies. However, Lettieri would appear in more games than Boyd, compiling 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points in 55 total games. Unlike Boyd though, Lettieri had been a key contributor for the Marlies during the current AHL Playoffs, with six goals and seven assists for 13 points in 12 playoff games."
"Based on his usage, the 31-year-old forward could see a potential return to Toronto next season, but once again as a depth option with the Marlies. Probability of returning to the Leafs: 20%"
