"According to insider David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, Tanev may be done for the remainder of the season. Some tough #LeafsForever news: Chris Tanev's regular-season may be over. Per sources, Tanev is meeting with a surgeon in the coming week to determine next steps. If they move forward with surgery, he is expected to be out until late-April/early-May.- David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) January 4, 2026"
"Assuming the worst, the Maple Leafs could place Tanev on season-ending LTIR (SELTIR). That situation would give the Leafs some cap relief. Per the current CBA rules, the Leafs would get about $3.8 million in cap space. While that may not be enough to find a defenseman of equal value, it would, nonetheless, give the Maple Leafs a chance to replace Tanev moving forward."
Chris Tanev may miss the remainder of the season while meeting a surgeon to determine whether groin surgery is necessary. Reports indicate a groin injury this week could require surgical repair after Tanev already missed time with a November concussion and brief returns followed by placement on injured reserve. If surgery proceeds, recovery could keep him out until late April or early May. The Maple Leafs could place Tanev on season-ending LTIR to gain roughly $3.8 million in cap relief under current CBA rules. That relief could enable trades or acquisitions, including a blueliner like Rasmus Andersson or one or two depth defensemen.
