Elliotte Friedman just connected the Leafs to an intriguing coaching candidate
"Malhotra, of course, has already been on the Toronto bench. Before becoming the head coach of the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks, he served as an assitant coach for the Leafs under Sheldon Keefe for four seasons, from 2020 to 2024. It was some of the best hockey we've seen in Toronto in decades, and he was a big part of the coaching staff there."
The Toronto Maple Leafs fired head coach Craig Berube and began searching for a replacement quickly. With many teams also needing new head coaches, the Leafs are reportedly reaching out to candidates early. Elliotte Friedman said the Leafs want to talk to Manny Malhotra. Friedman noted Malhotra’s name came up during Toronto interviews when considering what type of person would appeal if a coaching change happened. Malhotra previously worked on the Leafs bench as an assistant coach for four seasons from 2020 to 2024 under Sheldon Keefe. He later became head coach of the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks and won a Calder Cup last year. Malhotra is viewed as a promising young coaching option who could become an NHL head coach soon.
