Craig Berube's response to Nylander's action is not what Leafs fans would expect
"Made a mistake. He owned up to it. You know, things happen. People make mistakes. Players make mistakes. Coaches make mistakes. It happens ... He knows it's wrong & he owned up to it,"
"While Nylander and Berube owned up to the mistake and are trying to move past it, there needs to be a conversation with the team's leaders about being leaders moving forward. This simple action involving Nylander looks terrible for the Maple Leafs. It appears that the Maple Leafs' leaders don't hold themselves to a high standard and set a good example for the rest of the players. Leafs management will need to sit down and have a talk about becoming more mature and taking situations seriously, or else nothing will change moving forward."
William Nylander gave the camera a middle finger while sitting in the press box during the Maple Leafs' loss to the Colorado Avalanche and later apologized, saying frustration prompted the gesture. Head coach Craig Berube accepted the apology, called it a mistake, and said people, players and coaches make mistakes. Berube indicated he is not worried about the incident moving forward. Team leaders and management should address leadership standards and maturity because the gesture reflects poorly on the Maple Leafs' image. The team remains highly skilled but underperforms and needs greater commitment to process and accountability.
