TTC warns of streetcar slow zones, service disruptions if repair funding not secured | CBC News
"Toronto's streetcar system could be staring down a future of slow zones, service disruptions and potentially even condemned corridors if the service doesn't get more funding for track work, according to a new report. The Toronto Transit Commission has an $11.9-billion funding shortfall for state-of-good-repair work over the next 15 years, according to a report before the TTC's strategic planning committee Thursday."
"The transit agency is asking members of the committee to send the report on to council, the province and federal government, to highlight the "immediate critical capital priorities" for the TTC, the report says. "If we don't get some of those unfunded [areas] addressed, if we don't get that funding that we need, it could have a serious impact on service," said TTC spokesperson Stuart Green."
The Toronto Transit Commission faces an $11.9-billion shortfall for state-of-good-repair work over the next 15 years, with $2.2 billion required in the next five years. Streetcar track work accounts for $84.6 million of the near-term need. Insufficient funding will slow the pace of maintenance, increasing slow zones, causing weekend or multi-day service restrictions and risking condemned corridors. Annual track surveys identify minor defects before they escalate. Predictable, multi-level government funding is necessary to maintain service levels and to inform the TTC's 2026 budget planning.
