Toronto basketball coach Bob Maydo remembered by former students, family, friends | CBC News
"Over the course of 46 years, Maydo taught math and coached basketball and track-and-field at four Toronto high schools: Bathurst Heights Collegiate Institute, Emery Collegiate Institute, Westview Centennial Secondary School and Newtonbrook Secondary School. He is widely regarded for his work on the court, but his families both found and related said it wasn't just about basketball. Generations of players recalled Maydo's ritual of opening the gym doors for students at 6 a.m. every day."
"Hassan Adenola, who went to Emery CI, started living with Maydo 13 years ago, after his brother got in trouble with the law. Worried he might go down the same path, Maydo opened his home to Adenola. He completed his undergraduate and Master's studies with Maydo's help. Although I did it for myself, I did it for him too, Adenola told CBC Toronto Friday. "He was so proud. He just wanted to see me succeed."
Robert 'Bob' Maydo died of a heart attack on Jan. 1 after a brief illness marked by shortness of breath and a neck blockage. Maydo taught math and coached basketball and track-and-field for 46 years at Bathurst Heights Collegiate Institute, Emery Collegiate Institute, Westview Centennial Secondary School and Newtonbrook Secondary School. He opened the gym doors for students at 6 a.m., creating a protected space for youth. He declined higher-paying university positions to continue working in Toronto high schools. He provided a home and academic support to Hassan Adenola, helped launch a food business in his kitchen and supported a non-profit youth program.
