"The Toronto District School Board says it's returning to merit-based applications for specialized programs after two years of lottery-style selection. The decision to change the admissions program comes from instructions from the minister of education, according to the announcement on the TDSB's website on Tuesday. Education Minister Paul Calandra told CBC News the merit-based system aims to recognize students' achievements."
"Since September 2023, the school board based admissions on students' demonstrated interest through a video or written explanation explaining their passion for the chosen field. That meant lottery applicants would be randomly selected if the demand exceeded the space in the schools. Now, elementary students will once again be required to submit a portfolio with their application and high schools will require applicants to meet a grade minimum. Depending on the nature of the program, applicants may need to audition or complete knowledge and skills exams."
TDSB is returning to merit-based admissions for specialized programs after two years of lottery-style selection, following instructions from the minister of education. Merit-based admissions will require elementary applicants to submit portfolios and high school applicants to meet a grade minimum; some programs may also require auditions or knowledge and skills exams. Since September 2023 admissions had been based on students' demonstrated interest through a video or written explanation, with lotteries used when demand exceeded spaces. Education Minister Paul Calandra said the merit-based system aims to recognize students' achievements and help ensure every student reaches their full potential. Some education experts warn that removing the lottery could be a step backward for equity.
