Subsequent move by Blue Jays with Orelvis Martinez even more shocking than his DFA
"It sure came as quite the huge shock for Blue Jays fans as Martinez had been one of the organization's highly-touted top prospects. But if everyone was thrown off by the sudden DFA of a promising young player, the subsequent move made by Toronto was even more shocking as the Jays officially released the infielder after clearing waivers, letting him go to free agency."
"It's one thing to give up on a DFA'd veteran that has failed to produce adequately at the major league level, but it totally doesn't make sense to do the same for a prospect that still hasn't reach their full development and potential, especially one that was only 23 years old. The Jays could have put Martinez somewhere in their minor league system following his waiver clearance to at least keep him and give him another chance in the organization,"
The Toronto Blue Jays designated Orelvis Martinez for assignment and then released him after he cleared waivers, making him a free agent. Martinez was a 23-year-old power-hitting prospect with consecutive minor-league seasons of 28+ home runs and 76+ RBI from 2021–2023. Martinez made his MLB debut in 2024 before a PED suspension interrupted his development and season. After returning in September, Martinez batted .304 with an .882 OPS, scoring eight runs, hitting five doubles, one home run and driving in three runs across 11 games. The organization chose not to retain him on their minor-league roster.
