"Pearson, of course, mostly operated in a high-leverage role during his final few seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, with whom he notched all three career major-league saves. But injuries and persistent command woes ultimately led to a breakup prior to the 2024 trade deadline, as the franchise struck a 2-for-1 deal with the Chicago Cubs, sending Pearson to the Windy City in exchange for prospects Yohendrick Piñango - now playing a key role for the Blue Jays - and Josh Rivera."
Nate Pearson is expected to return to the majors after missing time since last August due to elbow soreness. He began the season on the injured list and had a right-elbow clean-up procedure over the winter. During rehab, he appeared in seven games exclusively as a reliever, abandoning earlier plans to stretch him as a starter. He has thrown up to 101.3 mph, totaling 8.2 innings with a 6.23 ERA and 5.47 FIP, along with 11 strikeouts and 11 walks. The Astros bullpen ranks near the bottom in fWAR, ERA, and FIP, and Pearson is expected to help in high-leverage late innings. Jeremy Peña is also expected to return from injury in Minnesota for two of three games.
