"This wasn't an accident, it was a murder,"
"It's not a great look. It disrespects the presumption of innocence, it disrespects the judicial process and the fact finding process in a criminal case,"
"something is broken,"
Ontario premier Doug Ford publicly called a fatal August head-on collision 'a murder' while standing with the victim's family. The accused, Jaiwin Victor Kirubananthan, faces several charges including dangerous driving causing death but is not charged with murder and the charges have not yet been tested in court. Kirubananthan previously faced charges related to a January collision involving an OPP vehicle in which the premier was travelling. Criminal lawyers warn that public comments from political leaders risk prejudicing juries, spreading misinformation and undermining the presumption of innocence and judicial fact-finding. Ford's commentary has been inconsistent and his office did not respond to requests for comment.
