"Ontario residents could soon get prescriptions for 14 more health issues from a pharmacist, rather than a family doctor, under new regulations proposed by the province. The province is consulting with health-care associations to implement the changes, which would also expand the authority of optometrists, psychologists and physiotherapists, according to a government news release Wednesday. Currently, Ontario pharmacists can write prescriptions for 19 ailments, including tick bites, cold sores and UTIs."
""These changes would help alleviate pressures on primary care providers, walk-in clinics and hospital emergency departments, giving them more time to help people with more complex needs," according to the province's statement on Wednesday. The Ford government has said it will connect every Ontarian to a primary care physician by 2029. The proposed regulations would also expand allowances for other health professionals."
Ontario proposes allowing pharmacists to prescribe for 14 additional health issues, expanding the current list beyond 19 ailments to include conditions such as shingles, swimmers' ears and sore throats. The province plans consultations with health-care associations and aims to connect every resident to a primary care physician by 2029. The regulations would broaden optometrists' ability to perform minor surgeries, permit certain psychologists to prescribe mental health medications, and enable dental hygienists and physiotherapists to order and perform X-rays, MRIs and CT scans to relieve pressure on clinics and emergency departments.
