"I made maybe one bad decision to go back home to keep working on my rehab and stay close to my family. At that moment, I wasn't pitching, I'm not feeling great, and I wanted to be close to my family. I didn't bring them to Canada because they were going to miss days in school. I thought about that. But I apologize."
"The 30-year-old right-hander dealt with nagging bicep and elbow issues last season for the Blue Jays and eventually wound up on the injured list in late September due to right elbow inflammation. It was Berrios's first time being placed on the IL in his 10-year career."
Jose Berrios has been cleared to join Puerto Rico's World Baseball Classic roster for the knockout round, according to manager Yadier Molina. The Toronto Blue Jays right-hander was initially denied insurance coverage during the round robin stage due to health concerns, along with other Puerto Rican players like Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa. Berrios struggled with bicep and elbow problems last season, landing on the injured list in late September with right elbow inflammation—his first IL stint in ten years. He missed the Blue Jays' World Series roster to focus on rehabilitation and family in Puerto Rico. After a difficult second half with a 5.15 ERA, Berrios has shown improvement in spring training with a 3.38 ERA over 10⅔ innings.
