"Evidence shows that speed cameras reduce unsafe driving and save lives,"
"A total ban on ASE would reverse years of progress on safety in school zones. It would place more pressure on police, increase enforcement costs, and most critically, endanger lives."
"We know speed kills and we need to keep our kids safe when they are going to school,"
"That's why we need those speed cameras. Whatever it takes, whether it is bigger signs we're already already doing that or a grace period before they get the second ticket so they know that they got the first ticket, or a threshold, all of that, we can discuss. Just keep them because it protects our kids."
Big-city mayors in Ontario sent a letter to Premier Doug Ford offering changes to local automated speed enforcement programs to persuade the province to allow the devices to remain or to obtain reimbursement if a ban proceeds. The provincial government introduced legislation to ban ASE across Ontario. The mayors requested reimbursement for initial setup costs and asked that traffic calming measures be installed only after the province refunds removal costs. Mayors emphasized that speed cameras reduce unsafe driving, protect children in school zones, and that a ban would increase police pressure, enforcement costs, and endanger lives.
