Joe Mantiply has been a sneakily good addition for the Blue Jays
Joe Mantiply was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Blue Jays, retroactive to May 18, due to left knee inflammation. The left-handed reliever had been performing well after a minor league deal in March and a call-up in early April, posting a 2.04 ERA and 2.88 FIP across 17.2 innings with a 22.5 K% and 5.6 BB%. He allowed only one home run, a notable improvement from last season. Despite being trusted, he was used mostly in low-leverage situations, with only two-thirds of his innings classified as high leverage. His prior major league success included strong 2021 and peak 2022 All-Star form with the Diamondbacks, followed by a 2023 dip and a 2024 rebound.
"Before their game against the New York Yankees, the Blue Jays placed Joe Mantiply on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 18th, with left knee inflammation. It's a shame, as the left-handed relief pitcher was off to a sneakily good start."
"Signed to a minor league deal in March, Mantiply was called up to the Blue Jays in early April as injuries began to mount. Since his call up, the veteran left-handed pitcher has a 2.04 ERA and 2.88 FIP in 17.2 innings pitched, along with a 22.5 K% and 5.6 BB%. Mantiply has only surrendered one home run, something that he struggled with last season."
"He's in the Blue Jays' circle of trust, but isn't often used in high leverage situations. Of his 17.2 innings, only two-thirds of them are considered "high-leverage" according to Fangraphs. Mantiply has had some medium leverage in the mix, two and two-thirds innings, but the Jays have mostly used the veteran lefty in low-leverage situations."
"With the Arizona Diamondbacks, Mantiply authored a 3.40 ERA and 2.94 FIP in 39.2 innings pitched, with a 25.1 K% and 2.5 BB% in 2021. Mantiply's best season by far was in 2022, finishing the season with a 2.85 ERA and 2.83 FIP in 60 innings pitched. He was named an All-Star that season, the first and only time he's achieved that feat."
