Hundreds of U of T students caught off-guard by delay in opening of new student residence | CBC News

Oak House is a 23-storey residence that will house more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students near Robarts Library on the University of Toronto St. George campus. Move-in dates scheduled for Aug. 23 and 24 were postponed because of last-minute construction delays, and some students received as little as two days' notice. Students who could postpone arrival were offered a $500 credit, and room and meal plan fees are to be pro-rated to reflect missed days and usage. Out-of-town students were provided with temporary accommodation at other student residences. Several incoming students reported feeling stressed and disappointed by the delay and short notice.
Move-in dates were scheduled this past weekend, on Aug. 23 and 24 but those dates have been postponed, according to students. Some students said they had just two days' notice about the move-in delay. On its website, the university said the residence will be ready about a week from the originally scheduled move-in date. Aaron Young, 18, is a social science student who came to Toronto from Victoria on Aug. 21.
According to the university, students who were able to delay their arrival until the building is ready, such as those who live locally, have been offered a credit of $500. They have been told that room and meal plan fees will be pro-rated in recognition of missed days and usage.
