Gardiner Expressway construction time 'halved' but completion date uncertain, says mayor | CBC News
Briefly

Construction on the Gardiner Expressway, originally expected to finish in April 2027, is now progressing much faster and is anticipated to finish by April 2026 or earlier. A section between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue has operated with two lanes in both directions since March while crews demolish and rebuild an elevated roadway segment. The provincial government invested $73 million to accelerate work, including permitting around-the-clock construction. The city transferred construction and maintenance responsibilities for the Gardiner and Don Valley Parkway to the province to reduce long-term costs. Final details such as patrol responsibilities and exact costs remain under provincial audit.
The Gardiner has been down to two lanes in both directions between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue since March as crews demolish and rebuild a stretch of elevated roadway. As CBC's Tyler Cheese explains, while the work was initially forecast to be finished by April 2027, officials are now moving up the expected completion date by a full year.
"I'm not an engineer when it gets done, it'll get announced. It is on time, on budget, even much faster than being on time," Chow said.
"Cutting the construction time by half is really a very good achievement and majorly proud of the partnership we have with the provincial government," she added.
