"Neethan Shan is campaigning to be the ward's city councillor for the second time in less than ten years. After winning a byelection to hold the seat in 2017 becoming the first Tamil-Canadian councillor he lost it to McKelvie in the 2018 election. But Shan has remained in public service as the chair of the Toronto District School Board and trustee for Scarborough Centre. He said his prior experience on council would help him hit the ground running."
Residents of Scarborough-Rouge Park will elect a new city councillor on Sept. 29 to replace Jennifer McKelvie, who was elected Liberal MP in Ajax. The ward stretches from Steeles Avenue E. to Lake Ontario and features a crowded field of about 20 candidates. McKelvie served as deputy mayor and assumed some mayoral powers after John Tory's resignation. Neethan Shan, a former councillor and current Toronto District School Board chair and trustee, is running to regain the seat and advocates more municipal support for small businesses and youth employment. TDSB trustee Anu Sriskandarajah is also a candidate; her husband Parthi Kandavel won a recent byelection for city council.
