"By around 6 p.m. ET on Dec. 21, 2022, the court heard Monday, the boy seemed calmer, Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber told a Halton Children's Aid Society (CAS) protection worker in an interview the next day. But when Cooney went to check on him, she found vomit everywhere and he was unresponsive, protection worker Faisel Modhi said in the witness box, referring to his notes from the interview."
"Modhi testified the women called 911 and told him they had performed CPR on the boy before paramedics and firefighters took over with no success. The boy was rushed to hospital, where he died shortly after. He was severely malnourished, emaciated and weighing the same as a six-year-old. Cooney and Hamber have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder of the boy they were trying to adopt."
A 12-year-old boy was locked in a basement bedroom while prospective adoptive parents monitored him on camera as he vomited, screamed and kicked. Later that evening he was found unresponsive amid vomit; the women called 911 and performed CPR before paramedics arrived. The boy was rushed to hospital and died shortly after, severely malnourished and weighing 48 pounds, comparable to a six-year-old. Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and related charges including confinement, assault with a weapon and failing to provide necessaries for the boy and his younger brother. Proceedings are ongoing and the Crown alleges abuse and neglect.
