"Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber have pleaded not guilty to murder in the Superior Court trial in Milton that began in mid-September. They've entered the same plea related to charges of confinement, assault with a weapon zip ties and failing to provide the necessaries of life to J.L. Younger brother testifying from separate room Called by the Crown, J.L. began testifying Wednesday by video from a separate room in the courthouse."
A 12-year-old boy, L.L., died on Dec. 21, 2022, after being found unresponsive, soaking wet and locked in a basement bedroom. Paramedics and witnesses described him as severely malnourished and emaciated. The adoptive guardians, Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber, face murder charges and related counts including confinement, assault with a weapon (zip ties) and failing to provide the necessaries of life. The younger brother, J.L., now 13, began testifying by video from a separate courthouse room with support present. Defence lawyers say the couple struggled to care for high-needs children with limited external support.
