Blue Jays option Tanner Andrews, select contract of Austin Voth
The Blue Jays made a roster move before their series finale against the Miami Marlins, adding pitching depth by optioning Tanner Andrews to Triple-A Buffalo and selecting Austin Voth’s contract for the 26-man roster. To create space on the 40-man roster, Alejandro Kirk was placed on the 60-day injured list retroactive to April 5, keeping his return timetable unchanged. Kirk is expected to begin rehab soon and become eligible to return on June 4. Kirk’s return is important because his recent production and defense make him one of the league’s top catchers. The activation decision will affect the backup catcher situation, with Brandon Valenzuela performing better than Tyler Heineman, who is out of options. Voth previously appeared for Toronto earlier in April and has posted a 3.38 ERA and 3.45 FIP this season. He previously had success with Seattle in 2024 and pitched in Japan before returning to MLB. Voth is expected to contribute in Friday’s game as Toronto covers Dylan Cease’s rotation spot.
"Needing more pitching help, the Jays optioned Tanner Andrews to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. In his place, they selected Austin Voth's contract and added him to the 26-man roster. To make room on the 40-man roster, Alejandro Kirk was placed on the 60-day injured list."
"Starting with Kirk, this doesn't change his timetable at all. He's expected to return soon, and begin his rehab outing even sooner. The move to the 60-day injured list is just retroactive to the first day he was placed on the injured list (April 5th). He'll be eligible to come off the 60-day IL on June 4th"
"Getting Kirk back in the lineup will be huge for the Blue Jays because when he's at his best, he's one of the best catchers in the big leagues. Last season, he slashed .282/.348/.421 with a career-high 15 home runs in 506 plate appearances while also providing stellar defence."
"Whenever the Blue Jays activate Kirk, they'll need to make a tough decision regarding their backup catcher. Brandon Valenzuela has been far better than Tyler Heineman this season, but Heineman is out of options, meaning he'll need to be designated for assignment if not on the 26-man roster."
