Blue Jays could lose key front office exec to open Rockies GM Job
"Click spent many years working for the Tampa Bay Rays, before the Houston Astros hired him amidst the sign stealing scandal. Previous General Manager Jeff Luhnow had been fired but the core of the club remained intact, giving Click a tremendous base to build from as the Astros were in the middle of a dominant run atop the AL West."
"According to reports, the Rockies have started interviewing candidates for that position, including Vice President of baseball strategy for the Blue Jays, James Click. Of all the reported executives in the running for the job, Click is the only one who has prior experience in that specific role as he was the GM of the Astros from 2020-2022."
"One could argue that leaving the Blue Jays for the Rockies wouldn't necessarily be an upgrade, but there are only 30 GM jobs in baseball and the opportunities to interview for those roles don't come up very often. The Rockies also represent a prospective GM with the chance to truly mold a team in their own way."
The Colorado Rockies opened a general manager vacancy after Bill Schmidt stepped down at the beginning of October. The club has started interviewing candidates, including Blue Jays vice president of baseball strategy James Click, who previously served as Houston Astros general manager from 2020-2022. Other reported interviewees include Scott Sharp and Matt Forman. Click spent years with the Tampa Bay Rays before joining the Astros amid the sign-stealing scandal and helped build a dominant AL West team that won the 2022 World Series; he later left Houston and joined Toronto. The Rockies have struggled since 2019.
